How to Boost Your Kids' Immunity and Protect Them From Sickness

"My child gets sick every two weeks, help!"

Kids getting sick is normal from time to time, but you don't want them sick all the time. We hear you, and we're here to help you be your child’s hero by supercharging their immune system.

No parent wants to see their child constantly sick. We do our best to prevent our children from being exposed to germs, bacteria, and other yucky things but unless we keep them in a bubble, they're going to come across a germ here and there. Rather than trying to prevent them from coming into contact with germs, let's focus on building those immune systems!

When we're able to boost kids' immunity, we provide them with the strength their bodies need in order to fight off all those bad bacteria and germs. When we teach our children how to keep themselves from getting sick, they can then take these skills with them everywhere they go. In return, parents will have healthier children and more peace of mind.

Wash Hands Together

Washing hands is an excellent way to get rid of all those nasty germs that children pick up throughout the day. Washing hands for 30 seconds or more with warm water and soap will help eliminate the germs on their hands. Be sure to teach your children to wash their hands after going to the bathroom, before eating, or after playing with friends.

It's also a good idea to teach your children to wash their hands more frequently when they have friends who are sick or during cold and flu season. Besides teaching them when or how often to wash their hands, it's also important to teach them how to wash their hands. Make sure they're using enough soap and warm water. 

Have them sing a song that's about 30 seconds long so they know when they can stop. You should also be sure to teach them to clean under all fingernails, in between fingers, and on the backs of their hands as well. If they're still small enough, wash your hands with them to help them get the hang of it. 

Practice Keeping Hands Out of Mouth

Think about all the different items your child touches during a normal day. If they're attending childcare or school, then you'll have to add in all the things they touch while there as well. 

After a child shares a toy, plays on playground equipment with other children, or touches the grocery cart at the store, what's the next thing they do? Soon after, they're going to touch their face. They may rub their eyes or nose and touch their ears. 

They may even put their fingers in their mouth. All of these allow the germs to then enter their bodies. For this reason, it's a good idea to practice keeping hands off the face and out of the mouth. 

If they need to itch, wipe, or rub, teach them to find a tissue box first or use their arm rather than their fingers if they must. 

Learn How the Body Works Together

It's difficult to understand why we must do something if we're never explained the reasoning behind it. This is true for everyone, children and adults included. Instead of simply telling your child they must wash their hands and they must keep their fingers off their face, explain to them why.

Why is keeping hands out of the mouth important? Why should we wash hands before eating? 

A great way to learn the answers to these questions is to learn how the body works. Each day or even one day out of the week, dedicate a few minutes to sitting down with your children and learning something new about the body, the immune system, germs and bacteria, or something else. Everyone in the family will most likely benefit from doing so, and even the adults might learn something new about how to prevent kids from getting sick!

When children begin to understand how the body works, how it fights off germs, and how germs affect the body, they can then understand why it's so important to do these things. 

Make Sure They Get Enough Sleep

Getting enough sleep each night is essential for everyone's health, your children's included. Younger children need more sleep than adults, so keep this in mind when planning a bedtime routine. Babies need about 14 hours of sleep each day while preschoolers need between 11 and 13 hours. 

As they get older, their bodies will need less sleep time, but should always get at least 8 hours of sleep each night. Your body does the most healing while you sleep. If you take this away from their bodies bodies, then they can’t heal properly

Set a bedtime for your child to abide by each night. You should also wake them up at the same time each morning. Eventually, their bodies will get on a schedule. You'll then notice them falling asleep more easily and waking up on their own as well. 

Eat Healthy Foods, Snacks, and Drinks

A great immune system booster for kids is a proper diet. What you put into their little bodies has a significant effect on their health. Start placing colorful and healthy foods on their plates at a young age. 

This will get them familiar with eating a variety of fruits and veggies. Try to find immunity-boosting foods for kids that have high levels of Vitamin D. These will all help boost that little immune system. 

It's also important to be a good role model for your children. If they see you munching on chips or other junk food, then they're going to want it as well. Try to limit how much of this food you have available for them and how much of it you eat in front of them.

It's okay to allow your children to eat junk food once in a while as a treat, but not an everyday occurrence. 

Limit Food Sharing With Friends When Possible 

Children are taught to share from an early age. Then, when they get older, they're more than happy to share with friends. This includes food items. 

We want to teach our children to share, but we also want to keep them safe. How can we combine the two? 

If your children have friends at daycare or school that they want to share with, then you can go over safe-sharing practices with them. Packing them hand-sanitizing wipes in their lunchboxes goes really well with this. If needed, then you can also consider packing a Ziplock bag or two with extras for their friends. 

They can give the whole bag to their friends while still having their own. This helps limit the number of germs that are transferred from one friend to another while eating. 

Toss Out All Used Tissues

It's a great idea to use tissues and teach children to use tissues as well. This is especially helpful when someone in the house has a cold or is feeling ill. Do keep in mind that after using the tissues, you'll want to toss them out as soon as possible. 

Don't allow tissues to pile up next to the bed or lie around on the couch. This allows germs the opportunity to possibly spread. Collect all dirty tissues or place small trash cans next to beds so children can easily toss them in without having to get up. 

You can also keep a box of tissues next to each bed in the house as well.
